Q1)
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
We have developed the antagonist who is a man and the agonist who is a woman in our horror film opening. We didn’t choose to have it like that because it’s the stereotypically thing, but because we thought this would be more believable.
Our antagonist fit the stereotype as mysterious, and at first sign he doesn’t really seem to be a killer – but it’s all about revenge from the old days in high school.
The challenge in our horror film opening is that our location aren’t in a typically place; like in the woods or in the wilderness, where no one else would be able see or find out what was going on. Which you usually always can in a horror movie, but our horror film is filmed in the exact opposite location – our is filmed in an area where a lot of people and families live. We chose to make the film in that area because that was the only house we were able to get which had a basement.
Q2)
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our film opening are the middle class represent as the main social group. It wouldn’t affect our film much if the film was an upper class, but it would if it were lower class; because then our main character (Susan Lesley) wouldn’t be able to have a job like she does.
The fact that our house has a basement tells us it’s a bit old house (not extremely modern) which helps a lot to set the mood in the end as mysterious and creepy. In the house are there a lot of modern stuff though; e.g. the electricity chain.
Q3)
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?
BBC would be the perfect media institution to distribute our horror film, because BBC is a very English and well known TV channel in the UK and worldwide; if it should be a TV film instead of a cinema film. The TV films are on a lower budget, and I honestly think that it would have a better effect hence with all the creepy and mysterious.
Q4)
Who would the audience be for your media product?
The audience should defiantly be at least 15+ because it’s a horror movie, and horror movies are usually at least 15+. Besides that could the audiences be every age up. The audience should be people who are into mysterious film, and where you don’t get the point handed to you. Our audience could be both men and women. Even though, it could be for 15+ and up; would most of the audience be in the age from 15 to circa 25 because the actors are young and that age group can relate more to it.
Q5)
How do you attract /address your audience?
The basic things to have when you will attract your audience are a film poster, movie trailer, interview with the actors and instructor, behind the scene clips, etc. A film poster is important because it’s the face of the film. A movie trailer is important so the audience can get a taste of the movie without knowing too much, but still being interested in it. Interview with actors, instructor etc. are important so the audience can get to know what the inspired them to be in the movie, make it or whatever they have to do with the movie. Behind the scene clips are important for the audience so they can see what happens during the movie and how they did things.
To attract audience for our film we would have a film title poster hanging all kind of places where people would notice them e.g. buses, highways, buildings, walls etc. It would probably look a little bit like this;
Q6)
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
From making our film have I learnt how to use a video camera properly which was a little bit easier than I thought it would had been.
The editing of our movie was a bit more difficult than I could imagine, because there are so much more things to do and so many choices to decide about how to represent your film. I would never believe that they editors actually have to change and do that many that many things before I tried myself. I’m still very surprised about how much work there is to do in a movie, and we only did an opening. Just the thought about editing a whole movie makes me a bit dizzy when I think I about how much work that will be then.
Before this task had I never tried to make a movie or used an apple mac computer, so it was all a bit of a challenge, but I can honestly say that I have learnt a lot. I have learnt how to use the camera angles and the meanings of them. I didn’t realized until now how many camera angles there are, and how much they actually effects the mood, meaning of the shot throughout a movie.
Q7)
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Our preliminary task was the 180 degree rule, which also was the first time we did practical work was a lot of fun. We did the acting our self, which helped us or at least me to understand task better I think. Because we had already done this task before it helped a lot with how to film the movie. Don’t think we would have done it properly if we had only talk about without trying it in real life as well.
When I think back to that time where we did the 180 degree rule till now, I really feel like I have learnt a lot. Not only about how to make a film, but also how to appreciate films more and understand the process of a film. I mean, the time it take to make a film is a lot more time than it is to see one.
